3D printing, 3D scanning and reconstruction of parts that are no longer available

When a part is no longer available we help recreate it: the original or a photo is captured by 3D scan or measurement, the geometry is reconstructed digitally and the part is produced by 3D printing in a suitable material. This service runs through OceanSphere Additive (additive.oceansphere.io). We check every request personally and reply by e-mail.

In short

What we do

  • 3D scanning and measurement of worn, broken or obsolete parts
  • Reconstruction of missing geometry as a CAD or 3D file
  • 3D printing in plastics and metals, depending on the application (materials are listed on the OceanSphere Additive site)
  • Prototypes, fit tests and one-off replacement parts
  • Honest assessment: if printing is not the right process for a part, we say so and point to machining or sourcing
  • Where agreed, the 3D file is kept so that the part can be reproduced later

OceanSphere organises the job and stays your single point of contact. The work itself is carried out together with vetted partner companies and experienced service engineers.

Machines, makers and components

Pumps and valves

Pump impellers, valve parts, housings and covers.

Couplings and fittings

Coupling parts, fittings, brackets, clips and covers on machinery.

Typical starting point

A worn or broken original, a photo with a ruler, or a drawing or 3D file if one exists.

What we need from you

The more you send, the faster we can judge the job. Missing details are no obstacle: send what you have.

  • The part itself (best) or photos from several sides with a ruler
  • Main dimensions and, if known, the original material
  • Medium and conditions: sea water, oil, temperature, load, function of the part
  • Quantity
  • Drawing or 3D file, if one exists
  • Manufacturer and type or model
  • Serial number or engine number (from the nameplate)
  • Photos: nameplate, the part or machine, the damage
  • Port or location of the machine or vessel
  • Date or time window, and any deadline
  • Vessel name and IMO number (optional, kept internal, never published)
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which parts can be rebuilt?

Many parts that are not highly loaded: for example impellers, valve parts, housings, covers and fittings. Highly loaded or safety-critical parts are assessed case by case, and sometimes machining or sourcing is the better route.

Is a printed part as strong as the original?

That depends on material, process and load. Printed parts behave differently from cast or machined parts, so the material is chosen from load, medium and temperature. The binding figures for your part are those in the offer.

Do I have to send the original part?

Ideally yes, because scanning and measuring the original gives the best result. A photo with a ruler is enough to start a request. Broken pieces are fine.

How accurate is the result?

Accuracy depends on the scanner, the part and the process. We state what is achievable for your part in the offer.

Do class requirements apply?

If the part is subject to class or other requirements, say so in the request so that we can check what is possible.

Is printing on board possible?

The OceanSphere Additive site describes on-board printing; see the link below. Tell us about your situation in the request.

Is a request binding?

No. A request is not an order. We check it personally and come back by e-mail with an offer or with questions. Orders are subject to our General Terms of Business.

Who carries out the work?

OceanSphere organises and coordinates the job. The work is done together with vetted partner companies and experienced service engineers. You have one contact person who keeps the overview.
