Thermal metal spraying: rebuilding and coating worn shafts and bearing seats

Thermal spraying applies a metallic coating to worn, corroded or undersized surfaces such as shaft journals and bearing seats. The coating is then machined back to size. OceanSphere organises the job with a partner company and coordinates it with machining where needed. We check every request personally and reply by e-mail.

In short

What we do

  • Build-up of worn shaft journals, bearing seats and seal running surfaces
  • Wear and corrosion protection coatings on shafts and machine parts
  • Salvage of parts with undersized seats instead of replacing them
  • Finish machining (turning or grinding) to the required dimension, coordinated with our machining partners
  • Assessment first: wear pattern, material and dimensions are reviewed before an offer is made

OceanSphere organises the job and stays your single point of contact. The work itself is carried out together with vetted partner companies and experienced service engineers.

Coating

Machines, makers and components

Shafts

Propeller shaft and intermediate shaft journals, pump shafts, motor and generator shaft seats, winch and crane shafts, rudder stock journals.

Bearing and seal seats

Bearing seats on shafts and in housings, shaft sleeve seats, seal running surfaces.

Typical damage

Wear, scoring, fretting at press fits, corrosion pitting, undersized seats after earlier repairs.

What we need from you

The more you send, the faster we can judge the job. Missing details are no obstacle: send what you have.

  • Drawing or key dimensions: diameter, length and width of the worn zone
  • Base material, if known
  • Type of damage: wear, scoring, fretting, corrosion or undersize
  • Required final dimension and tolerance
  • Operating conditions, for example sea water, oil, load, speed
  • Manufacturer and type or model
  • Serial number or engine number (from the nameplate)
  • Photos: nameplate, the part or machine, the damage
  • Port or location of the machine or vessel
  • Date or time window, and any deadline
  • Vessel name and IMO number (optional, kept internal, never published)
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What kind of damage can be repaired this way?

Typically wear, scoring, fretting, corrosion pitting and undersized seats on shafts and bearing seats. Cracks, bent shafts and structural damage need to be assessed first; send photos and measurements and we tell you whether spraying makes sense.

Why spraying instead of build-up welding?

Thermal spraying puts less heat into the part than build-up welding, which lowers the risk of distortion. Which process fits depends on the part, the material and the load; the partner company assesses this.

Is the finish machining included?

The coating is applied with allowance and machined to the final dimension. We coordinate this step; the scope of each job is stated in the offer.

Does the part have to be dismantled?

Normally the part is removed and treated in the workshop. Work in place is only possible in special cases; describe the situation and we check.

Is there a size limit?

That depends on the equipment of the partner company. Send diameter, length and weight and we check.

Is a new part an alternative?

Often. We can offer both: the repair by spraying, or a new or reconstructed part (see Spare parts sourcing, Machining and 3D printing and reverse engineering).

Is a request binding?

No. A request is not an order. We check it personally and come back by e-mail with an offer or with questions. Orders are subject to our General Terms of Business.

Who carries out the work?
